Competitive advantages of Damietta Governorate

Damietta Furniture City

The furniture industry in Damietta Governorate waited for over a century to be rescued from the haphazard nature of its traditional craftsmanship and embrace modern manufacturing systems. With the beginning of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's term, the idea of transforming this long-established industry into a new phase based on science, technology, research, and marketing emerged. This gave rise to the dream of establishing Damietta Furniture City. Damietta Furniture City Company is an Egyptian government-owned joint-stock company, established by Prime Ministerial Decree No. 999 of 2015. It operates in the furniture manufacturing sector and is located in the Shatta area of Damietta Governorate, covering an area of 331 acres, at the intersection of the International Coastal Road and the Port Said/Damietta Road. Its strategic location is approximately 25 kilometers from Damietta Port and 55 kilometers from Port Said Port.

Damietta Port

Damietta Port is one of the oldest ports in Egypt, dating back to the time of the Pharaohs. The French campaign discovered Pharaonic artifacts in Damietta (part of a narthex) made of granite, which were transferred to the Louvre Museum. Damietta Port was one of the main ports in Egypt in ancient times, and in addition to its commercial importance, it acquired military importance as it was considered the key to Egypt, its forward stronghold, and the bridge that connects Europe and Asia. Damietta Port flourished starting from the rule of Muhammad Ali with participation in building the Egyptian naval and merchant fleet. It was the most important Egyptian port, and through it, most of the foreign trade was exported and imported. The most important exports were furniture, shoes, fishing net yarn, salt, and palm fronds, while imports were limited to ground licorice. The largest export movement was with Palestine, Syria, and Cyprus.

New Damietta City

New Damietta is a first-generation city in Egypt, established according to Prime Ministerial Decree No. (546) of 1980. It represents an achievement in the field of urban development and the creation of new urban communities, contributing to addressing urban planning challenges in Egypt. It was established to curb the growth and expansion of the existing city of Damietta at the expense of agricultural land, and to accommodate the services needed by the Damietta Governorate, such as universities and industrial zones. It also aims to develop the tourism sector and capitalize on the city's Mediterranean coastline, which is suitable for summer tourism.
